I started Daytrippers International in late 2014, after an amazing trip to Italy. In planning the trip, I found it difficult to easily find quality tour guides. I spent a lot of time doing research and wished there was someone who could recommend great guides all over the world. And voilà…Daytrippers International was born. I have worked in the travel industry for over 25 years and this venture has renewed my excitement for travel. There is so much to see and learn. I hope you’ll join us in exploring our world.
Why do I love tour guides? The biggest reason for me is that it allows me the freedom to really see the site I’m visiting while simultaneously drinking in the information and stories that my guide is providing. I also like being able to just follow them wherever they take me. They know the best routes, they have tricks for getting through busy areas seamlessly and they usually have cool, interesting things to show me that I hadn’t anticipated. Plus, it’s fun to meet a local. You feel much more connected to the city you are visiting.
I do have certain things I look for in a guide. For me, these are the qualities that make a guide top-notch.
- Knowledge – I want a guild who can answer any question that might pop into my head.
- Passion – I want to be inspired. I’ve told this story many times but I’ll share it with you. While touring the Vatican, we walked through a long hallway. Upon entering, I just thought it was a bunch of boring maps and I would have just walked straight through if I was on my own. Then my guide reminded me that these tapestries had been created without the benefit of air travel. The maps were made solely from calculations made at sea or on land…and they were pretty darn accurate! Okay, mind blown. They suddenly became beautiful works of art and I wanted to spend more time with them. I had many similar experiences over the remainder of my tour and that is why I will ALWAYS use a tour guide.
- Clarity – I want to understand my guide. Obviously, they need to speak English but they also need to speak it clearly. I love accents like the rest of you but they aren’t so adorable when they’re so thick you can’t understand half of what the guide is saying.
- Likability – Let’s face it, we spend a lot of time with the guides and we don’t want to feel we’re listening to someone read a textbook. I want a guide that I enjoy being around.
Our goal at Daytrippers International is to excite you about your upcoming trip, to inspire you during it and to leave you with rich memories of our world, its various cultures and its amazing history.
